New Mexico Humanities Council Chautauqua Players and Speakers.The Chautauqua scholar, acting in character, relates the period history and spins yarns, sings songs, and recounts personal events, all with the voice of firsthand experience. The speakers bureau offers talks from archeology to cultural differences, from regional and individual histories to land use issues, with the speakers helping your group enjoy a lively discussion of the subject at hand. Through NMHC subsidies, these programs are inexpensive for libraries!

Paulette Atencio.Atencio grew up in Penasco, N.M., and has been presenting authentic traditional Hispanic stories for 23 years. Sunny Dooley,(Navajo) Storyteller.  Sunny Dooley is a Native Dine’ from a community called Chi Chil’ Tah (Where the Oaks Grow).  The stories she tells are stories that have been told for generations from her matrilineal clan of the Saltwater People Clan.  Having Dine’ as her first language, Miss Dooley interprets her People’s stories in English with their entire rich cultural, traditional, and historical context.

Jan Macek. Snake Conservation.  Many native nonvenomous snakes. Her goal is to try to make people understand that snakes are wonderful creatures and nothing to fear. They are more afraid of us than we should be of them. Even rattlesnakes are not that fearsome when one educates themselves about venomous snakes. Luke Renner, New MexicoYo-Yo Slinger. Mr. Renner has over 18 years of yo-yo performance experience from the streets of Berlin to the coasts of California.  He began performing as a yo-yo man at the Farmington Public Library back in 1991 after winning a yo-yo contest in Durango, Colorado.  Performances are a combination of expert skill on a string complete with a magical touch.

Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary.  Great wolf education programs featuring a live wolf.  Audiences of all ages seem to enjoy this.  Located in the high-desert country of New Mexico, Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary provides a permanent home to over fifty wolves and wolf-dogs. Lynette Harris, Sandhill Sage: Tales of Wisdom. Drawing from children’s literature, folk tales, and her own experiences, Ms. Harris chooses stories that feel right from the beginning. Blending the rhythm of her drum and the spoken word, her enchanting stories captivate listeners. Ms. Harris also is a first grade teacher and coaches an after school storytelling youth group.
