State and Federal Depository Programs
The State Publications Depository Program disseminates the information compiled and published by state agencies as widely as possible in order for all New Mexico citizens to have access to the reports, statistics, newsletters, bulletins, impact statements and countless other studies published each year by the various state agencies and commissions.
This is accomplished through the State Depository Clearinghouse at the New Mexico State Library (NMSL) to which state agencies send 30 copies of all paper, CD-ROM and other physical formatted publications for filing, distribution and public access. Web-based and born digital State Publications are filed by state agencies with the State Library, digitally archived and available for permanent access through the State Library's online catalog SALSA.
The New Mexico State Library has served as a Federal Depository Library for the State of New Mexico since 1960.
Librarians, state employees and citizens can identify tangible federal documents held by the New Mexico State Library as well as links to electronic documents and federal web sites through the SALSA Online Catalog. It is important to note that many documents published before 1976 are not yet included in the catalog.
State Library reference holdings include indexes that assist in the identification and location of historical documents, statistics, federal legislation and regulatory information. Our reference staff is trained in the use of these resources, and specialized reference service pertaining to federal information is available to librarians statewide. Call the toll free reference line 1-800-876-2203 or Ask a Librarian directly.
There are 9 selective federal depository libraries and 3 shared regional depository libraries in the State of New Mexico. Public and school librarians are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the resources of the library in their region for appropriate patron referral. Each collection has its own unique focus and staff that specialize in the retrieval of government information.
