About New Mexico News Plus

What is New Mexico News Plus?

Initially conceived as a tool for New Mexico’s libraries, students, teachers, citizen activists, and federal/state government policy makers, New Mexico News Plus is updated each morning in response to the news of the day. If the morning papers report that the New Mexico State Attorney General is joining with other state officials to challenge the federal government’s Clean Air Mercury Rule, or if there is a story about a recent Supreme Court decision regarding freedom of speech, librarians from the New Mexico State Library and New Mexico State University team up to establish direct links to the text of the mercury rules and the Supreme Court opinion under discussion. Each day brings on a new search for the text of a specific piece of legislation moving through Congress, a link to congressional testimony, the text of environmental impact statements posted by agencies for public comment, census statistics that reflect current population shifts, health statistics, and reports released by agencies such as the Surgeon General Report on the Health Consequences of Second Hand Smoke or the Report by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.
The site is intentionally designed to respond to the specific information interests of our state and local community, but many of the links are of broader interest.

Updates

New Mexico News Plus is updated daily each weekday. The New Mexico State Library makes every attempt to post updates by 9:30 am Mountain Standard Time. New Mexico State University content is added during the remainder of the day. Posting times for weekend updates can vary, but major stories from the weekend are posted on Monday if not on the day of.

Scope

Newspapers reviewed:

  • SantaFe New Mexican
  • Albuquerque Journal
  • Albuquerque Journal North
  • Las Cruces Sun-News
  • El Paso Times

In an attempt to reflect both national as well as specific local interests, focus is given to local media, but national news sources are occasionally included in the daily posting.

Links are made primarily to Federal agency documents and pages and New Mexico State and local government sites, but Federal  and State government information is the main focus of the page. The page also provides selected links to the web pages of associations and non-profit organizations mentioned in the news.

Cautionary Note regarding the identification of legislation

Every attempt is made to provide accurate links to the specific text of the bill or amendment referenced in the news. Congressional offices and clerks are contacted to verify accuracy when there is doubt. However, due to the complexity of the legislative process and the number of bills moving through congress on the same or similar topics, errors in identification are possible. The page is not to be used or relied upon for legal proceedings.
