A NEW BOOK REVIEW SITE 

Reading New Mexico, an online review spot for books with a New Mexico connection will post its first reviews on September 1, 2008, at http://www.readingnewmexico.com .  The site will feature reviews of books by New Mexico authors and/or books with a New Mexico setting. 


New Mexico author and former librarian, Sabra Brown Steinsiek saw a need for a place where New Mexico books could get the attention they deserve. The site will be updated monthly (at least) and will be accessible to the general public. Reviews will be posted by both author and title.  

Reviewers include a number of authors and readers and Sabra is looking to New Mexico’s librarians for help.

Reading New Mexico doesn’t do “slash and burn reviews”.  That’s not to say all reviews must be positive, only that they must be civil. Final approval on reviews is Sabra’s. 

This is a non-paying gig. At the moment all costs are coming out of Sabra’s pocket and it’s not that deep! You will receive a byline and a link to your website or your library’s website. Albuquerque librarians are encouraged to sign up for the list of books available for review since Sabra can hand-deliver those. Right now, there are insufficient funds to mail books out to the rest of the state… but she’s working on that!

State Aid grants.  The 2008/2009 State Aid Grant Awards have been posted on the New Mexico State Library website at: http://www.nmstatelibrary.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=83&Itemid=137 under the heading, “2008/2009 State Grants-in-Aid to Public Libraries.” 

As soon as each library grant has a State of New Mexico purchase order generated for it and these have been approved through the state process, each library will receive an official letter.  At that time libraries may submit invoices for payment.  Please do not submit invoices for payment until your notification letter has been received. 

Those libraries that did not receive State Aid either did not meet the per capita, the hours requirement, did not submit an annual report, do not have a board, or in other ways did not meet the criteria to qualify as a public library as per the terms of state statute.

NM reference librarians.  New Mexico librarians participated in the Reference Renaissance conference (see http://www.bcr.org/referencerenaissance/index.html) held in Denver August 4-5.  Bernadine Goldman and Lizzie Eastwood, both from the Los Alamos County Library System, were joined by Karen Long of Farmington Public Library in a panel discussion entitled “You Bought It, Now Sell It! Creating a Reference Renaissance in the Public Library by Merchandising Collections and Services.”  The panel discussed ways to increase the visibility and usage of public library reference by merchandising hybrid collections and marketing varied service approaches in an ever-changing environment. 

Karen spoke on her library's efforts to market their reference services. Not just chat reference, but reference by any venue the library does. The first step was designing a logo. They settled on a puzzle piece with the words "just ask!" which you can view at Farmington Public Library's web site at http://www.infoway.org/. The next step was to put the logo all over their library (including large versions plastered to the ref desk), web site and brochures. They also have some of their employees wear "just ask" pins. They also use mp3 "cordmen" earbud holders to promote the IM part of the "just ask" service. Karen emphasized that it was important to do demonstrations of chat reference for staff. They have to understand the product and its potential before they can promote it to others. 

In addition to the “in the library” measures above, Karen stressed the importance of getting the message into the community through venues such as the use of radio spots and attending rotary club meetings.

Bernadine and Lizzie explained how they have promoted reference collections using the goal “make sure that all users of the reference collection are aware of all the resources available, and are introduced to them all in one place.”  The point is to show patrons and other staff tangible AND electronic resources the library has to offer on given topics in the reference collection. This is done in three main ways:  Rearrange the physical collection into broad subjects without abandoning Dewey entirely 
  2. Integrate electronic resources into the physical collection through the use of lists and brochures 
  3. Create displays of reference materials in the low shelving areas of reference. 

For the rearrangement of the physical reference collection, Bernadine came in over a weekend and created several sub-collections in reference including: Aging, Health, Weapons, Environment, Culture, and Jobs. She then brought all the books together on these topics regardless of Dewey classification. For example the Health section includes Public Health items from the 300s as well as medical books from the 610s. 

The next step was to comb through their databases and the list of RUSA Best Free Reference Websites list and classify them into the same keywords as the reference books. These lists of  “resources by keywords” were then posted by their corresponding section in the physical collection. 

Finally, books and resource lists were put on display using low shelving in the reference area. Another promotional tool used with highlighting the availability of ten free photocopies from books in the reference collection. This seemed to give patrons permission to use the “don't check out” collection. 

A user at the library commented that this method “doubled the value of the collection.”

Library photos The State Library is working to enhance an upcoming feature to go on our new website: an interactive New Mexico Library Directory.  This project targets public libraries although there will be basic information available for school, academic, and special libraries, too.  It will include photos showing the libraries as well as the contact information for each.  So we’re asking you for your best shots –clear digital pictures of the library building, or possibly unique art work or interior shots that showcase your library.  Send your photos to Robert Upton, This email address is being protected from spambots. Gifts & exchange.  That’s not all!  The State Library would also like to make a space on its website for libraries to offer books and other materials to other libraries in the state.  This will not be a site where catalogs of materials would be listed, but rather a space to broker exchanges.  If you have materials that you would be willing to give to another library, send a general description of how many titles, what types of materials, and conditions for the give-away with a person for interested parties to contact to the attention of Robert Upton, This email address is being protected from spambots. Library science class.  The University of New Mexico will be offering an online class this fall: “Organization and Administration of the School Library Media Center,” EMLS 460/560.  Tuesdays will be the designated time to connect online, but most coursework can be accomplished from a personal computer.  There is still time to register.   For more information, contact Leslie Chamberlin at (505) 277-7260 or This email address is being protected from spambots. NMLA seeks newsletter editor The New Mexico Library Association is seeking an editor for the NMLA Newsletter/Bulletin.  The editor receives $100 per issue. 

The editor is responsible for soliciting contributions for each newsletter; setting deadlines; compiling text, photos, and graphics; proofreading each issue; and submitting an electronic file to the NMLA Administrator.  Currently, six newsletters are produced per year. 

The position of newsletter editor is an appointed position, recommended by the Public Relations Committee and approved by the NMLA Executive Board.  The editor is an ex-officio non-voting member of the Executive Board and the Public Relations Committee. 

The newsletter is currently produced in Microsoft Publisher, and a template is available.  Past issues may be viewed at http://www.nmla.org/Newsletters/newsletters.html .  The position will begin with the November/December issue of the NMLA Newsletter/Bulletin.

International Literacy Day in NM.  New Mexico will celebrate International Literacy Day, Monday, September 8 with John Corcoran, “The Teacher Who Couldn't Read.”  The New Mexico Coalition for Literacy has organized this event for the New Mexico State Capitol Building, 491 Old Santa Fe Trail, in Santa Fe at 10 - 11:30 a.m.  After the reading of the proclamation of International Literacy Day at the Roundhouse in the Rotunda, the featured guest speaker will be John Corcoran, author of "The Teacher Who Couldn't Read."  Mr. Corcoran learned to read after he became an adult, only after he had already taught for many years! John Corcoran once lived in Santa Fe and now serves on the Board of the National Institute for Literacy.  He also promotes intergenerational literacy efforts both through his advocacy and foundation.  For more information contact Heather Heunermund, 800-233-7587, This email address is being protected from spambots. The Special Collections Library is opening a new exhibit September 20 with a Chautauqua performance by Dave Jackson portraying Clyde Tingley, famous New Mexico governor and Albuquerque mayor. The Chautauqua performance is at 4 p.m.; you are invited to attend it before joining NMLF at 5 p.m. for the donors’ event.  Parking is available on adjacent residential streets and in the parking garage by Old Albuquerque High School on Arno NE.

Rio Rancho has hired a new director, William (Bill) Cicola.  He has been a library director in the Long Island, New York area for many years before retiring to Mountainair.  Retirement didn’t take, however;  he got bored and applied  the position at Rio Rancho.  He brings a strong background in RFID (radio frequency tagging) that is an issue Rio Rancho Library has been working on.

Librarian.  The Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, part of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, has an opening for Librarian - Advanced, Department of Cultural Affairs (Job ID:  16905)  This is a full-time, permanent position with the State of New Mexico.  Requires a Master's degree in Library or Information Science (ALA Approved) and four years post-masters library experience with knowledge of the anthropology and archaeology of the Native American Southwest.  This position requires some evening and weekend work; must have a valid driver's license; some heavy lifting, kneeling, using stepladders and pushing carts; and substantial computer use.  The purpose of the position is to enhance the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology's commitment to the public by actively recruiting, training, and supervising Library staff and volunteers, and participating in MIAC/LAB operations;  facilitate access to Laboratory of Anthropology Library collections on Southwestern anthropology, archaeology, and Native American art and culture;  acquire and maintain research collections and support supplies for the Laboratory of Anthropology Library;  maintain an up-to-date automated catalog and index of Laboratory of Anthropology Library holdings. This is highly demanding library position responsible for serving a diverse client base including research associates, staff, school groups and the general public. School librarian.  Central Consolidated Schools has a Librarian position open at Kirtland Central High School (KCHS).  Working under the supervision of the School Principal, the Certified Secondary Librarian maintains and operates an efficient school library and works with building staff to instruct students in use of information resources.  This person provides an extensive collection of books, research materials, etc.;  coordinates library instruction with class assignments, workshops, and one-on-one instruction;  processes and catalogs library materials;  prepares and administers the library budget;  assists library patrons to locate information and resources for their personal use;  oversees Internet usage in the library;  attends professional development conferences as required;  networks with other library professionals;  is responsible for daily operations of the library and its services, including setting of library policy and hours;  helps students to develop skills of independent reference work and in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments;  promotes appropriate student conduct while using library facilities;  participates in curriculum and school leadership meetings;  complies with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines, and local, state, and federal laws; and performs other job responsibilities as assigned.  Requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher and a current New Mexico Secondary teaching license with Library/Media endorsement.  A valid driver’s license, knowledge of universal hygiene precautions, and knowledge of automated library software and databases is also required.  The one year contract is exempt status for 185 days/7.5 hours per day.  For information and to complete an on-line application go to www.centralschools.org .  CCSD is located in the Northwest corner of New Mexico and an easy drive to the Colorado mountains, Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Navajo Dam, Canyon de Chelly, the 4-Corners Monument, and much more!  Farmington is 10 minutes east of KCHS and is the major shopping venue for the region.  The position will remain open until filled. 

 

Library technician.  The Fray Angélico Chávez History Library, Palace of the Governors, in Santa Fe is seeking a permanent, part-time Library Tech/Archivist.
