Interview: Kathy Barco's New Book on Censorship in the Library

Kathy Barco and Valerie Nye want librarians to know that they're not alone in their fight to keep controversial books on the shelves. Barco, literacy coordinator with New Mexico's Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System and a former children's librarian, and Nye, a librarian at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, have co-edited True Stories of Censorship Battles in America's Libraries (ALA Editions, 2012), a collection of essays, some by children's librarians, that movingly describe what it's like to be caught in the crosshairs when someone objects to a controversial book.

SLJ spoke to Barco about the importance of intellectual freedom, who benefits most from their book, and what readers can take away from it.
