The New Mexico State Library has a comprehensive collection of reference materials available for use in the library. Besides helping people who walk in, phone, or ask questions by e-mail, the reference collection is used to help smaller libraries throughout the state answer the reference questions of their local patrons.

The reference collection provides a starting point for information on almost any subject through general and specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodical indexes, business directories, and telephone directories. Materials include books, magazines, microfilm and microfiche, and electronic databases.

Areas of particular strength in the Reference Collection include:

 Grants 

    * Foundation Center Cooperating Collection, the State Library provides on-site access to the Foundation Directory Online, a database of 80,000 foundations and 500,000 grants and Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, a database of more than 6,000 foundation programs that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers. Print Foundation Center directories, including those with a subject and audience focus, provide another avenue for identifying funding sources for non-profit organizations.

    * Materials on grant writing, fundraising, and non- profit management

    * Directories of funding sources for individuals, including scholarship money.

    * Sources of federal and state money for organizations and individuals

Library Science

    * Directories, encyclopedias, dictionaries and periodical indexes in the fields of libraries, publishing, computers, and information science
    * Comprehensive print collection of library and information science journals and review sources

Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers

    * Searchable electronic indexes to general, academic, and business periodicals, including full-text access to many journal articles via El Portal.

    * Online access to the full text of the Santa Fe New Mexican, Albuquerque Journal, and other newspapers.

    * Print subscriptions to magazines and journals, especially in the subject areas of New Mexico history and culture, library science, and government.

    * Print subscriptions to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, plus microfilm back to 1851 and 1962 respectively.

Government Documents

    * Federal Depository Library - a selective collection of Federal publications in print, microform, and online.

    * New Mexico State Depository - a comprehensive collection of state publications - in print and online.
