Fueling Economic Opportunity in the Creative Economy


The New Mexico State Library, in partnership with Creative Startups, NMSU Arrowhead Center, and regional public libraries, is launching an innovative program, designed to generate future-facing jobs through supporting startups in the creative industries. The project seeks to: (1) transform rural and tribal libraries into vibrant creative economy development hubs; (2) build capacity to reach, educate, and accelerate underserved entrepreneurs; (3) deliver best-in-class educational and technical development workshops for creatives. Through this project, libraries will become change catalysts, driving economic opportunity, wealth creation, and inclusion in their communities.

The project weaves three core activities that, in combination, will grow sustainable capacity in communities seeking to lift up creative entrepreneurs: (1) Educators Circle, (2) Creative Startups LABS, (3) Creative Tech Workshops.

Educators Circle

Educators are nominated by a community member or Head Librarian, selected based on their passion for teaching and their interest in supporting entrepreneurial activities in their communities. This can be a member of the library staff and/or community members. We will seek and accept nominations for participating “Educators” from community organizations such as higher education, libraries, high schools, and economic development offices.

Educators join a peer learning network and receive training, support, and curriculum they then apply in their community. Educators gain specific pedagogical approaches for teaching entrepreneurship, an understanding of varied learning styles and relevant teaching techniques, exercises, tools, and resources for creating highly engaged classes, and guidance in creating curriculum and syllabi for entrepreneurship classes/workshops.

Creative Startups LABS for Patrons

This “bootcamp” styled entrepreneur education program is designed for startups seeking to enter the market and gain traction.  LABS is a 4-week program including 6 course modules, case studies, peer-to-peer learning, and a celebratory final event for startups and their champions and supporters. Creative Startups faculty co-teach LABS with Educators as they learn the curriculum and become fully equipped to teach on their own. The 6 LABS Modules include:

(2)   Who Are Your Customers, Exactly?

(3)   Prototype Your Painkiller!

(4)   Delighted & Pain-free Customers (Always Come Back for More)

(5)   Get Paid to Kill the Pain

(6)   Putting It All Together: A Profitable Business Model

Additionally, final 2.5 day events may include workshops that round out participants’ knowledge including Building a Cash Flow Model and Pitching for Love or Money.

Creative Tech Workshops for Patrons

Full and half-day workshops serve small business and startup owners seeking to improve their marketing, operations, and technical skills. Creative Tech Workshops include “Creating YouTube Ads,” “Photoshop & InDesign,” “Marketing in a Social World,” “Podcasting for Profit,” and “How to Etsy.” These workshops are intended to build a community’s capacity to support, promote, and scale local businesses.

Creative Tech Workshops ideally include regional youth (ages 15 to 25) who can build tech skills and deploy these through internships with local startups and small businesses and community organizations.

El Día de los Libros


El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), known as Día, is an everyday celebration of children, families, and reading that culminates every year on April 30. It emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. Children’s Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, acclaimed children’s book author and New Mexico native Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of children with literacy to found Día.

How can my library celebrate Día?

Día programs can range from a single story time to a citywide celebration. Be sure to start any Día program by talking about Día and why it matters.
Here are just a few programming ideas (see the list of Día resources below for many more):

  • Start small- it’s easy to encourage regular visitors to your library to celebrate Día by reading the books they check out (or have at home) to someone special in their life.
  • You can celebrate Día as simply as offering a bilingual story time. Add related bilingual songs, finger plays, snacks, a craft, and/or a fun felt board story to the books for an inexpensive, engaging celebration. This can be in any 2 languages, tailor it to what fits your community.
  • Get the whole family involved- encourage children and parents to spend the day reading to someone special.
  • Ask Friends groups or community organizations to donate books so participants can go home with a book to keep, to start their own at-home library.
  • Create a display of bilingual books and books in languages common in your community. Consider including folktales from different cultures as well. Add bibliographies of those and other books in your collection and have them available printed in your library as well as on your website. In addition, encourage local bookstores to create bilingual book displays.
  • Host a multicultural food program. If you have a kitchen area, this may include a cooking demonstration by a local chef or home cook. Otherwise, ask chefs and community members to bring in foods native to their ancestral cultures to share at the library; have them include information on that culture and the foods common to it.
  • Offer a program featuring traditional crafts from a variety of cultures. Ask for community members to explain crafts from their cultures and assist children in making them.
  • Similarly, have a program featuring dance from different cultures. This can include demonstrations and/or classes.
  • Multicultural music is always popular and relevant to Día. Invite one or more musicians to give a short concert.
  • Involve families in bilingual writing projects such as family stories and local histories, including oral histories.
  • Assist young people in writing and illustrating bilingual books and presenting bilingual plays or readers theater.
  • Take the opportunity to increase your bilingual collection.
  • Host a children’s writing or art contest, with the winner announced at a Día program.
  • Invite families to share their traditions at a program on family and community traditions.
  • Invite a local author to give a talk on his/her book and explain its cultural foundation.
  • Collaborate with local schools and preschools, Head Start programs, and other family-oriented organizations to create larger joint programs.
  • Día also provides a great opportunity to teach the community in general about multiculturalism, so consider programs for adults as well as children and families. Many of the ideas above could work for all ages.

New Mexico FamilyPass

The New Mexico State Library, in partnership with local public libraries in New Mexico and the museums and historic sites of the Department of Cultural Affairs is excited to offer the New Mexico FamilyPass to library card holders throughout the state.

The FamilyPass provides free admission for up to six people to any of the Department of Cultural Affairs museums and historic sites.  Patrons borrow the pass, which circulates like other library materials. The sites are:

How to get and use the FamilyPass

  • Passes are available at any of the 120+ public libraries and their branches in New Mexico.   
  • The FamilyPass will circulate to library cardholders in good standing with the library.
  • Each pass will admit up to six people.
  • Passes may be used by community groups such as senior centers, after school clubs, summer camps, arts councils, and more!

Digital Project Grants - LSTA 2010

The New Mexico State Library is pleased to announce the availability of LSTA Grants for Digital Project Grants for Public Libraries. The purpose of the grant opportunity is to provide public library staff access to the skills needed to complete digital projects in their library.

  • All Reimbursements Requests must be submitted: by June 30, 2011

  • Final Project Report due: by September 30, 2011
